Never Miss the JUPAS Application Deadline
The JUPAS application deadline is typically in late December. Missing it means you cannot apply through JUPAS for that year. Set multiple reminders and submit your application well before the deadline. Late submissions are not accepted under any circumstances.
Prepare for Interviews Well in Advance
Some competitive programmes, especially in medicine, law, and education, require admission interviews. These interviews can significantly affect your chances of admission. Start preparing at least one month in advance by practising common questions, researching the programme, and conducting mock interviews with teachers or peers. Being unprepared for an interview can cost you a place even if your academic results are strong.
Put Your True Dream Programmes in Band A
Over 80% of JUPAS offers go to Band A choices. If you put a programme in Band B or lower, your chances of an interview or offer drop drastically. Be realistic, but make sure your top 3 choices are where you truly want to go.
Ensure 'Attained' in Citizenship and Social Development
CSD replaces Liberal Studies and is no longer graded 1-5**. You MUST get an 'Attained' grade for it to meet the minimum university entrance requirement. Failing CSD means you cannot enter a local university via JUPAS.
Utilise the 24-Hour Choice Modification Window
After DSE results are released, you will be assigned a specific 24-hour time slot to modify up to 5 JUPAS choices free of charge. Set an alarm for your specific time slot and adapt your Band A choices based on your actual score.
Check Your Spam Folder for Interview Invites
Universities send interview invitations and conditional offers via email. These critical emails often end up in the spam or junk folder. Check your spam folder daily from May to August so you don't miss an opportunity.
Pay the JUPAS Acceptance Fee Immediately
If you get a Main Round offer in August, you usually have less than 48 hours to pay the acceptance fee (around HK$5,000). If you miss this deadline, your offer will be revoked with no exceptions. Keep the funds ready in advance.
Double-Check Your DSE Exam Timetable
Always print out and double-check your admission form and the HKEAA exam timetable. Arriving late or at the wrong exam centre can lead to disqualification or a severe mark penalty. Know your transport routes in advance.
Meet the '332A33' Baseline for Top Universities
Universities like CUHK, HKUST, and PolyU have a strict minimum entrance requirement of 332A33 (Levels 332 in Chi/Eng/Math, Attained in CSD, and Level 3 in two electives). Missing even one level in these core requirements means automatic rejection.
Log in to JUPAS Regularly
Do not wait for emails. Make it a habit to log in to your JUPAS account regularly, especially around key dates (OEA submission, interview periods, results release). Important system messages are posted directly to your dashboard.
Pack Your Exam Essentials the Night Before
Always pack your HKID card, Admission Form, approved calculators (with the HKEAA sticker), multiple pens, and a watch the night before the exam. Forgetting your ID or Admission Form can cause severe panic and delay your entry.
Pay the JUPAS Application Fee to Complete Submission
Creating an account and picking programmes is not enough. Your JUPAS application is NOT considered complete until the HK$460 application fee is fully paid and acknowledged by the system. Do this days before the deadline.
Have a Solid Non-JUPAS Backup Plan Ready
Even if your predicted grades are stellar, DSE results can be unpredictable. Secure at least one conditional offer from a reputable sub-degree institution (like HKU SPACE or HKCC) via E-APP or direct application as your absolute safety net.
Submit Supplementary Information Forms (SIF) on Time
Many competitive programmes require a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) in addition to your JUPAS application. SIFs typically include personal statements, extracurricular activities, and referee information. Check each programme's requirements carefully and submit SIFs before their individual deadlines, which may differ from the main JUPAS deadline.
Understand How Universities Calculate Your DSE Score
Different universities and programmes use different weighting formulas to calculate your admission score. Some programmes give extra weight to specific subjects relevant to the field of study. Always check the official admission score calculation method for each programme you are interested in, as relying on raw grades alone may give you an inaccurate picture of your competitiveness.
Submit OEA Before the Early January Deadline
The deadline for submitting Other Experiences and Achievements (OEA) is usually in early January. Don't wait until the last minute. A well-organized OEA can grant you bonus points or interview opportunities, which are crucial for competitive programmes.
Calculate Scores Using the New 8.5 Scale
Remember that major universities (HKU, CUHK, HKUST, PolyU) now use the 8.5 point scale (5**=8.5, 5*=7, 5=5.5). When checking past admission data, make sure you are looking at figures that reflect this new calculation method.
Apply via E-APP as a Safety Net
Don't rely solely on JUPAS. Use the E-APP system between December and May to apply for Associate Degree or Higher Diploma programmes. Getting a conditional offer early will drastically reduce your stress during the DSE exams.
Consider the SNDAS Scheme for Special Talents
If you excel in sports, arts, or specific disciplines, ask your principal about the School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme (SNDAS). It allows direct university admission before DSE exams, bypassing standard grade requirements.
Check for 'Combined Cert' Deductions
If you are a repeater combining results from different years, check the university policy carefully. While most programmes accept combined certs without penalty, competitive courses like Medicine or specific scholarships may deduct points.
Update JUPAS if Your Grades Improve After Remarking
If your DSE grades are upgraded after an appeal in mid-August, you must submit a request via your JUPAS account for reconsideration. Universities will re-evaluate your application based on the higher score and may offer you a better programme.
Start Building Your Portfolio Early for Creative Arts
If you are applying for design, architecture, or fine arts programmes, a strong portfolio is often more important than your DSE score. Start curating your best work months in advance and tailor it to the specific style of the university.
Familiarize Yourself with MMI Format for Medical Courses
Medical and healthcare courses often use Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI). You will rotate through different stations testing ethics, communication, and problem-solving. Practice with timed scenarios and read up on current medical ethics issues.
Leverage HKU's 1.5x Subject Weighting
HKU applies a 1.5 multiplier to English or Mathematics for many of its programmes. If you are extremely strong in English or Math but average in other subjects, strategically placing HKU programmes in Band A can maximize your admission chances.
Aim for GPA 3.3+ in Sub-degrees for Articulation
If you are taking an Associate Degree or Higher Diploma as a stepping stone, maintaining a high GPA is crucial. A GPA above 3.0 gives you a chance, but to secure an offer from top UGC-funded universities, aim for a GPA of 3.3 to 3.5 or above.
Know the Exam Weather Arrangements
Typhoons or Black Rainstorm warnings can disrupt DSE exams in April/May. Memorize the HKEAA guidelines: typically, if a signal is hoisted at 6:15 AM, morning exams are postponed. Listen to the radio or check the HKEAA app on bad weather days.
Declare SEN Early for Exam Accommodations
If you have Special Educational Needs (SEN), apply to HKEAA for special exam arrangements (like extra time or specific tools) months in advance. Similarly, declare SEN in your JUPAS application so universities can provide support during interviews.
Fulfill Every Term of a Conditional Offer
If you receive a conditional offer (e.g., from an early round or principal nomination), read the fine print. You usually must achieve a specific minimum score and place the programme in Band A to guarantee the offer.
Prepare for Health Checks for Medical/Nursing Programmes
If you are admitted to healthcare programmes (Nursing, Physiotherapy, Medicine), you will be required to pass a strict medical examination and get specific vaccinations before starting your clinical placements. Check the requirements early.
Build a Good Relationship with Your Principal for SPN
The School Principal's Nominations (SPN) scheme offers massive advantages. Principals usually nominate students with strong leadership, excellent conduct, or outstanding extracurriculars. Be proactive in school events to get noticed.
CityU Heavily Favors Band A Applicants
City University of Hong Kong is known for allocating almost all of its offers to Band A applicants. Do not place a CityU programme in Band B expecting an offer; put it in Band A to maximize your chances.
Don't Be Confused by PolyU's Large Score Numbers
PolyU uses an internal conversion formula resulting in scores like 180 or 250, unlike the standard 20-30 Best 5 scores. Always compare your projected PolyU score against their specific past data, not against other universities.
Research Scholarship Opportunities Early
Many university scholarships have application deadlines shortly after DSE results are released. Research available scholarships before results day so you are ready to apply immediately. Keep a portfolio of your achievements, awards, and extracurricular activities updated throughout your school years to make scholarship applications easier.
Attend University Open Days Before Finalising Choices
University open days give you a chance to tour the campus, talk to current students, and attend programme information sessions. This firsthand experience can help you make more informed decisions about your JUPAS choices. Most universities hold open days between October and December, which aligns well with the JUPAS application period.
Take Your Student Learning Profile (SLP) Seriously
The SLP is often requested during interviews or for borderline cases. Write your personal statement genuinely, focusing on your passion for the subject rather than just listing achievements. A strong SLP can push you over the edge.
Look into SSSDP Subsidized Programmes
Don't overlook the SSSDP scheme. It provides heavy government subsidies for high-demand self-financing degrees like Nursing, IT, and Architecture. These can offer great career prospects at a fraction of the cost of a standard self-funded degree.
IELTS is a Bonus, Not a Replacement
For local JUPAS applicants, you still MUST meet the minimum DSE English requirement (usually Level 3). A high IELTS score (e.g., 7.5+) can be submitted as supplementary information and may help in borderline cases, but it does not exempt you from DSE English.
Apply for University Halls Immediately After Offer
On-campus accommodation is highly competitive in Hong Kong. The moment you register for your university in August, look for the student housing portal and apply. Waiting even a few days can put you at the bottom of the waitlist.
Have a Non-JUPAS Backup Before the Clearing Round
Relying on the JUPAS Clearing Round is dangerous, as only a tiny fraction of unfilled quotas are offered. If you don't receive a Main Round offer, accept your backup sub-degree offer immediately while waiting for the Clearing Round results.
Be Collaborative, Not Aggressive, in Group Interviews
In university group discussions, professors look for teamwork and critical thinking. Do not aggressively interrupt others or monopolize the conversation. Acknowledge others' points and build upon them politely to score high in leadership and communication.
Observe Proper Dress Code for Interviews
First impressions matter. Unless specified otherwise, wear business casual or your full school uniform to university interviews. Ensure your attire is neat and tidy. Avoid jeans, sneakers, or overly casual wear.
Use Category C Languages Strategically
With the new 2026 scoring, official language tests (like JLPT N2/N1 for Japanese) are converted to DSE scores. If you are already fluent in a foreign language, this is an excellent way to secure an easy 'Level 5** equivalent' elective score.
Keep Your JUPAS Password Secure
Do not share your JUPAS login details with anyone, not even close friends. There have been incidents of choice tampering. If you use school computers, always log out completely and clear the browser cache.
Accept the Offer First Before Asking for a Gap Year
If you plan to take a gap year, you cannot simply ignore the JUPAS deadline. You must pay the acceptance fee, register as a student, and formally apply for 'Deferment of Study' with your faculty. Otherwise, you lose the seat entirely.
Mature Applicants Age Requirement
To apply as a mature applicant, you must be 25 years old or above by September 1 of the admission year. Universities will look at your work portfolio and experience rather than just DSE scores, making it a viable alternative route.
Attend Programme Info Sessions in May/June
After the DSE exams, universities often host final info sessions before you lock in your JUPAS choices. Attend these to get the latest admission trends and advice directly from professors.
Prioritize Mental Health During DSE
The DSE period is notoriously stressful. Ensure you sleep for at least 7 hours a night and take short breaks during revision. Burning out before your exams will hurt your performance more than studying an extra hour.
Choose Between Associate Degree and Higher Diploma
Choose an Associate Degree if your ultimate goal is to articulate into a traditional university degree, as the curriculum is more academic. Choose a Higher Diploma if you want vocational skills to enter the workforce quickly.
Know the ApL Elective Limit
While 'Attained with Distinction' in Applied Learning (ApL) subjects is recognized by universities, almost all programmes allow a maximum of ONE ApL subject to be counted in your score calculation. Do not drop core electives entirely for ApL.
